Join us for a workshop focused on successfully growing avocados in the greater Santa Cruz area. We'll cover the particulars of avocado care, with an emphasis on variety selection for the Central Coast, A-B flowering types, pollination demystification, soils and site selection, irrigation, fertilizers, pruning, and seasonal care. There will also be a troubleshooting / Q&A segment to provide all levels of the avocado-obsessed with the information necessary to set you on your way toward monstrous avocado harvests, as well as a seasonal tasting of around a half dozen varieties to help find which variety might be perfect for you.

This class will be taught by Ellen Baker and Freddy Menge of Epicenter Nursery. Freddy and Ellen have spent over 30 years growing and foraging fruit in California’s central coast, fueled by their passion for discovering exceptional varieties. They founded Epicenter Nursery to share rare, connoisseur-quality avocados that thrive locally, continually refining their methods to grow healthier, better-producing trees. Beyond avocados, they also tend a sustainable apple orchard that showcases high-flavor, European-style apples and relies on minimal synthetic inputs to preserve biodiversity and soil health.

Pre-registration is required for this workshop. Email accommodation requests to agroecology.ucsc.edu.

Presented by the Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden. Members receive a 10% discount on workshop costs. Learn more about becoming a member and sign up at: https://agroecology.ucsc.edu/get-involved/join-the-friends/index.html
